 CAROLINE’S APIARY

Local Beekeeper and Soap maker.

Caroline's Apiary was established in 2020. After completing a course with a local beekeeping association in 2018, I now manage 20 colonies at different sites throughout Harrow. I am privileged to keep bees at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House, also Windfield House and Hyde Park in London. I have a passion for beekeeping and thoroughly enjoy my hobby. I have won awards for my honey and other hive products, at both our local Harrow Show and at The National Honey Show.

An aspect of this hobby I particularly enjoy, is the role I have in educating people on the importance of bees and other pollinators in the environment. As a beekeeper, I not only provide a comfortable home for my bees, but I also monitor my colonies for pests and diseases, that if left undetected, could be detrimental to their existence.

During the 2019 lockdown, I began experimenting with different ways of using honey, beeswax and propolis. To extend my skills, I started making soap, lip balm's, solid moisturising bars and honey hand cream, as a way of using the valuable wax the bees produce. I also make beeswax food wraps, beeswax candles and beeswax polish. All products are safety tested and registered with The Office for Product Safety and Standards. I am a member of the Guild of Craft Soap & Toiletry Makers as I feel it is important for customers to have confidence in the safety of my products.

I believe that the customer always comes first  and that means exceptional products and exceptional service.

BEESWAX CANDLE BLOOM

On occasion, customers have asked,

“Is there something wrong with your beeswax candles?”

“Some of your candles seem to have a whitish film on the outside!”

Rest assured this is a good thing. What you see is something called bloom.

Bloom is a direct result of the natural tannins found in pure beeswax that finds its way to the candles’ surface.

This visual appearance can only be made possible if the candle is actually ‘100% pure beeswax’.

Bloom is further accelerated by fluctuating temperatures (more so with cooler temps).

Those who actively shop for pure beeswax candles are rewarded for their efforts when they come across a ‘Bloom’n candle’.

For those who insist on a pure beeswax candle, but would rather enjoy the appearance of that ‘golden yellow shiny sheen look’, don’t worry.

Lightly running a hair dryer, on low setting up and down the candle, will remove the ‘bloom’ and give you that golden yellow shiny sheen look. You can even lightly rub your candle with a soft, lint free cloth to achieve the same results, or put the candle on a sunny windowsill.

A little something to remember:

If your 100% pure beeswax candle does not ‘Bloom’ that means it is not 100% pure beeswax and is most probably blended with paraffin or soy.

Please enjoy your pure beeswax candle and embrace the bloom!
